Looking through the Hugo nomination stats, I note a couple of things:
Anansi Boys had more than enough nominations to make it on to the novel ballot but was withdrawn, allowing Old Man's War to slip in. (Update: he explains why he withdrew it here.)
Geoff Ryman nearly got on to the novelette ballot with The Last Ten Years in the Life of Hero Kai.
I am heartened by the Burstein and Resnick short stories coming in fourth and fifth, because I disliked them both.
Fan writer was pretty close this year too.
